What does an audio editor do?

Most audio editors handle some or all of this. Pick the parts you need and we'll put them in your brief.

  • Podcast editing

Cut mistakes, long pauses and filler, then tighten each episode so it flows and keeps people listening.

  • Noise and echo clean-up

Reduce background hum, wind, echo and clicks so voices sound clear, even from a rough recording.

  • Mixing and levels

Balance voices, music and effects, and set loudness to suit Spotify, YouTube, radio or social.

  • Video and ad soundtracks

Clean up dialogue, add music and sound effects, and mix the final soundtrack for videos and ads.

  • Intros, outros and music

Add your theme music, sponsor reads and stings, and source licensed tracks when you need new ones.

  • Interviews and webinars

Tidy up interviews, webinars and training audio so they can be reused as episodes, clips or lessons.

  • Voice-overs and radio ads

Edit and polish voice-overs, radio spots and audio ads, with versions cut to the lengths you need.

  • Clips and final files

Export the right file formats, cut short clips for social, and upload episodes to your podcast host.

  • Recording set-up advice

Suggest microphones, rooms and remote recording tools so your next session needs less fixing.

Questions about hiring an audio editor

Straight answers to what NZ business owners ask us most.

How much does a freelance audio editor cost in New Zealand?

As a guide: single episode or recording, NZ$150–$450; series or video soundtrack, NZ$450–$1,500; larger production, NZ$1,500–$5,000+. Freelancers set the final price after reading your brief, and it's free to enquire.

What should I include in an audio editing brief?

Include a sample of the raw audio, how long the finished piece should be, where it will be published, any intro, outro or music you already have, and how many episodes or files you expect each month.

Do I need an audio editor or a video editor?

If the job is mainly about sound, such as a podcast, voice-over or noisy interview, brief an audio editor. If you need footage cut, titles and colour, see video editing. Many video projects use both.

Can an audio editor fix a bad recording?

Noise, echo and uneven levels can usually be improved a lot, but not always removed completely. Send a sample first so the editor can tell you what is realistic before you commit.
