How much does a freelance UX designer cost in New Zealand?
A UX audit with quick fixes usually costs NZ$2,500–$6,000, and designing a first version of an app NZ$8,000–$25,000, excluding GST. UX designers quote after reading your brief. The amount of research and testing and the number of screens move the price most.
Should I hire a freelancer or a UX agency?
A freelancer suits a defined job like an audit, a feature or a prototype, and you work directly with the designer. An agency makes sense when you need research, design and development managed together over several months.
I don't have a brief. Can I still start?
Yes. Most people don't have one. Tell us what you're trying to achieve and we'll turn it into a brief with you before anything goes out to UX designers.
Who owns the designs and prototypes?
You should, once you've paid. Agree in writing that design files, prototypes and research transfer to you, and ask for files in a shared account your business owns, such as Figma.
What's the difference between a UX designer and a web designer?
A UX designer focuses on how easy something is to use, often inside apps and booking or checkout flows. A web designer focuses on how a website looks and presents your business. Many people do a bit of both.
Do I pay GST?
Only if your freelancer is GST-registered. Registered UX designers add 15% GST to their quote, while many sole traders earning under NZ$60,000 a year aren't registered and won't charge it.
How long does it take to find someone?
We aim to start sharing interested UX designers within a few working days of agreeing your brief. When work starts depends on their availability and your timing.
