Most android developers handle some or all of this. Pick the parts you need and we'll put them in your brief.
Builds a first version of your app in Kotlin, from the screens you have sketched to a working build you can test on real devices.
Sets up your Play Console account, listing, privacy details and release tracks, and gets the app live.
Tests the app on a range of screen sizes, Android versions and brands so it does not only work on the developer's own phone.
Updates an app to the target Android version Google Play requires, so it is not removed or hidden from new users.
Finds the crashes, slow screens and battery drain in an existing app and fixes the ones that cost you customers.
Builds apps for rugged handhelds, barcode scanners, tablets and kiosks, installed privately for your team.
Links the app to your booking, stock, accounting or customer system so staff and customers see the same information.
Reviews code written by a previous developer or agency, tells you what state it is in and takes over the maintenance.
Looks after bug fixes, new Android releases and small improvements on a monthly or as-needed basis.

Straight answers to what NZ business owners ask us most.
If your customers or staff mostly use Android phones, or you need the app to run on handheld scanners or kiosks, an Android developer is the simplest choice. If you need Android and iPhone from one build, say so in the brief and ask applicants to explain how they would approach it. Brief an iOS developer if iPhone is the main target.
You need a Google Play Console developer account, ideally registered in your business's name rather than the developer's, so you keep control of the app. Your developer prepares the listing, privacy and data safety details and uploads each release.
Android runs on phones and tablets from many makers, with different screen sizes and versions of the system. An experienced Android developer tests on a range of devices, and on your actual handhelds if staff will use it.
Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android version, and an app that falls behind can be hidden from new users. Ask applicants how they will keep the app up to date after launch.
A simple app can take 6 to 10 weeks. An app with accounts, payments and integrations commonly takes 3 to 6 months. The applicant will give a timeline once they have read your brief.
Ownership is agreed between you and the freelancer. If you want to own the code and the Google Play account, say so in the brief and confirm it before work starts.
Say what the app should help people do, who will use it, the three features it must have first, which devices it must run on, any systems it must connect to, and your rough budget and timing. A link to an app you like helps.
We'll help you shape the brief, find New Zealand freelancers who fit, and introduce you.
