Industrial Design for a Cost Effective GPS Chart Plotter and Fishfinder Range

Lowrance needed to refresh its entry level Eagle GPS chart plotter and fishfinder range so it felt more modern, more valuable, and more aligned with the wider Lowrance product family, without losing sight of cost effectiveness. The challenge was not just aesthetic. The product needed to feel better, work better, and solve known user frustrations in a tough marine environment.

As part of the Industrial Design process, I worked through market analysis, range positioning, concept development, and detailed product refinement. A key focus was improving the cable connection experience, where user feedback had shown issues with difficult plug in, poor seating, and potential sealing problems. Through sketching, testing, and iterative design development, we created a twist lock connector system that improved usability, reduced user error, and was strong enough to be patented.

The final product helped elevate the perceived value of Lowrance’s entry level range while keeping the design practical, brand aligned, and commercially realistic.
