Creating a Minimal Home Audio Dock for the Digital Age
Studio-quality sound with unparalleled versatility.
Orbitsound was known for British audio technology and proprietary Airsound soundbars, but the Dock E30 marked a shift towards a more design led, lifestyle focused product. The challenge was to create a premium audio dock that could sit comfortably in the home, support modern media habits, and deliver high quality shared audio without looking like a traditional speaker box.
As Industrial Designer and Creative Director, I helped shape the product from early thinking through to manufacture. The design centred around a minimal form, an intuitive device groove, simple controls, and a product language that referenced classic HiFi while still feeling modern and unobtrusive. The product also needed to support real everyday use, including WiFi, Bluetooth, optical, AUX, wireless charging, and USB C connectivity.
The project moved beyond concept design into production delivery. Every component was custom designed to meet acoustic and aesthetic requirements, with renewable wood used for both sonic and environmental reasons. I also managed a team of engineers in China from engineering validation through to mass production, giving the project a strong foundation in design for manufacture, not just visual design.
