Fix bugs, Add functionality, Improve user experience

Let’s Learn is a not-for-profit, community, further-education coordinator for the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.

Zoe approached me for a quote with a list of requirements and bug fixes. Their site had grown over the years had a sizeable database of course providers. The result was that the site had become slow and increasingly expensive to maintain and edit using their existing IT provider.

The main thrust of the changes was better user experience by improving the organisation of categories & sub-categories of course providers, clearer presentation of search results & fixing bugs in the existing custom-coded carousel.

As there was a significant overhead in site administration, adding and editing courses etc. I suggested that this overhead be eased by upgrading the existing events calendar to include a series-of-events managed in a single point of editing.

The main challenge with this project was that it was a live site that couldn’t tolerate significant down-time. Development was therefore done on a staging site and with careful attention to backups. The file system was quite large, which I discovered was due to a large number of images that had accumulated over time. I managed to sanitise the files considerably (and carefully).

I now host this site under my Care Plan in order to keep a close eye on it to ensure everything is kept up to date and running smoothly. The Care Plan includes ongoing support and updates.
