Environmental Signage for Mt Vernon Park’s Community Planting Days

Project Thumbail for Environmental Signage for Mt Vernon Park’s Community Planting Days - Nicky Busch
Community Signage Design | Mt Vernon Park – Port Hills Park Trust

I partnered with Mt Vernon Park, managed by the Port Hills Park Trust, to design posters and on-site signage promoting their community planting days. The Trust’s mission is to conserve and enhance the natural environment while creating meaningful opportunities for public recreation within the Port Hills in Christchurch.

The signage was created to raise awareness of the park’s ecological restoration efforts and to encourage community participation in upcoming planting days — events that are vital to the success of the Trust’s work, as they rely heavily on local support and volunteer involvement.

The designs needed to be clear, welcoming, and informative — speaking to both seasoned conservationists and newcomers alike. The messaging highlighted the importance of the planting initiative, which is supported by Trees That Count (Te Rahi o Tāne), who fund the planting of locally sourced native trees.

As volunteers help maintain the area, the vision is for this once-degraded valley to transition into a thriving native forest. Over time, the goal is to link the restoration zones in the upper and lower Albert Valley through continuous planting. This long-term effort will help reduce soil erosion, increase native biodiversity, and ultimately create a cherished natural space for future generations.

It was a privilege to contribute to a project that not only informs but inspires action — connecting design with environmental impact and community engagement.
