Improving teachers engagement and understanding of Dyslexia

Project Thumbail for Improving teachers engagement and understanding of Dyslexia - Ella Silvester
Dyslexia is a difference in brain wiring. Teachers around the country often misunderstand dyslexia due to a lack of attention during university and teacher training. This lack of teaching and misunderstanding has resulted in many people having late diagnosis or missed identification of their dyslexia, myself included. Growing up, I was an intelligent kid, but I always avoided reading and writing where I could. During the research phase of my project, I was screened for dyslexia and was recommended a formal diagnosis if I wanted it. Still, due to the cost, I have not been able to get a diagnostic assessment. Many students live under a teacher’s radar because they may not exhibit the typical signs, such as getting b’s and d’s mixed up.

Despite many teachers being supportive of dyslexic students, stigma and a lack of knowledge remain when teaching and identifying students who may be dyslexic. Only 65% of teachers believe they can identify dyslexic learners in the classroom, and 12% believe they are equipped to teach these students (Elias). I recognized a need for a teacher’s resource to help better understand dyslexia in the classroom. With this increased awareness, we can support students to achieve their full potential despite their dyslexia.

This project had me interested in how to help teachers understand dyslexia.
